Computer Gaming: How to quickly load a city

This procedure can be used in either SimCity 3000 or SimCity 3000 Unlimited.

  1. This will let you quickly start the game and load an existing city in one fell swoop!

  2. First, you have to find the folder for the game in your Start menu. This is not as hard as it sounds.

  3. The easiest way I know of is to right click on your Start menu button. A small menu will pop up.

  4. Depending on the version of Windows, the folder for the game will be located in one of two places:

    • The Program group for All Users

      OR

    • The Program group for the user currently logged into Windows

Normally its in the Program group for the user currently logged into Windows.

  5. So, from the pop up menu, choose Open. This looks like this (your pop up menu may look different):

  6. Open the Programs group by double clicking on it.

  7. If you installed the game in the default path, you will have a Maxis folder there. Open it.

  8. Then, depending on which version of the game you have, open the SimCity 3000 or the SimCity3000 Unlimited folder.

  9. Now, go to Start -> Run and type explorer in the box and click OK.

  10. A Explorer window comes up. Arrange the windows so you can see both the folder for the game (from the Start menu) and the Windows Explorer window.

  11. In the Windows Explorer window, navigate to where you save your cities. I save my cities in a folder called My Cities. Yes, that's a very Windows-ish name!

  12. RIGHT CLICK AND DRAG the folder where you save your cities and DRAG it to the other window where you navigated to the folder for the game in the Start menu.

  13. When you have dragged to the other window, let go of the mouse and choose Create Shortcut(s) Here. A shortcut will be created there. You can rename the shortcut if you wish.

  14. The Start menu folder for your game will look something like this:

  15. Then close all the open windows, insert your game CD, quit the Launcher.

  16. Navigate the Start menu and choose the city you want to work with. If you want to start a new city, just start the game from the Start menu.

  17. Get into the habit of just quitting the launcher and using the Start menu.

Hope this helps!
