That is a picture of a Rain Stick. It not wood, but is acutally the arm of a cactus. The indians in the mountains of Chile push the thorns inside the stick and fill the hollow center with small stones. The ends are then capped off. It is said that in order to bring rain, you must hold the stick at a forty-five degree angle and slowly turn it.
